How to Measure Your Wrist

  1. Get a flexible measuring tape (or use a string + ruler)
  2. Wrap it around your wrist just below the wrist bone (where you'd wear a watch)
  3. Don't pull too tight - leave it comfortably snug
  4. Record the measurement in both inches and centimeters
  5. Add 0.5-1 inch (1.3-2.5cm) for comfortable bracelet sizing

Understanding Watch Dimensions

Case Diameter

The most important measurement. Measured across the watch face from edge to edge (excluding crown). Most men's watches are 40-44mm. The formula: wrist width in mm ÷ 4 ≈ ideal case diameter.

Lug-to-Lug Distance

The distance from the top lug tip to the bottom lug tip. This should not exceed your wrist width. If lugs overhang your wrist, the watch is too large even if the case diameter seems right.

Band/Lug Width

The gap between the lugs where the strap attaches. Common sizes: 18mm, 20mm, 22mm, 24mm. Typically about half the case diameter. This determines what replacement straps will fit.

Case Thickness

Thinner watches (7-9mm) are dressier and slide under shirt cuffs easily. Chronographs and dive watches are thicker (12-15mm) for added functionality and water resistance.

Tips by Watch Style

  • Dress Watches: Stick to 36-40mm. Slim profile (7-9mm thick). Should slide easily under a dress shirt cuff.
  • Dive Watches: 40-44mm is classic. Larger is acceptable for tool-watch aesthetic. Rotating bezel adds visual presence.
  • Chronographs: 40-44mm works best. Multiple subdials need space. Avoid undersized chronographs (hard to read).
  • Pilot Watches: Traditionally oversized (44-48mm) for legibility. Strive for lug-to-lug within wrist width.
  • GMT/Travel Watches: 40-42mm sweet spot. Balanced proportions with the 24-hour bezel.
